A short story

A friend of mines father, Graham Bailey, told me of an experience he had many years ago.

"The previous day I was caught in a late afternoon storm on the return leg to Liverpool of my cross country test for my PP Licence. Eventually, having no fuel left, there was not much choice but to make a forced landing in the Pennines. Map ruined, me frozen, no radio, no blind flying instruments and, of course, no parachute. The twin wing tanks had tiny surface mounted gauges on them - you can just see the port one in the shot taken from the back - it was anyone's guess as to how much fuel remained as there was always condensation on the glass. The field turned out to be 250 yards long and downhill, this aircraft normally needs 400 yards. The PICTURES were taken by the Daily Express on 25 march 1951 at Penistone, the aircraft was not damaged.

Twas an interesting landing." Graham.

Updates

Chaps, and chapesses's,

A couple of updates I thought you might find interesting if you haven't already come across them.
From 1st January 2009 it will be mandatory for aircraft flying in France to be equipped with PLBs or ELTs, however there are some exceptions:-
All French Microlights are excluded (surprise, surprise) but the other good news is the LAA believe that foreign Microlights AND permit aircraft will also be exempt. Well worth checking out as most of us fall into these categories.

Secondly, as of 1st December 2008 RAF St Mawgan became a civil aerodrome known as Newquay EGHQ. This means that the MATZ has been replaced by an ATZ and ATC being on 133.4. The operators have said that they want to make the airport a centre of excellence for GA and that there will be plenty of fly-ins and visits to the tower available with all GA aircraft welcome. Maybe a fly out or a drop in on the way to the Perranporth bash would be in order?

Regards
Paul.
